Trauma Division Gains National Recognition for Research
The faculty and staff of the Trauma Division distinguished themselves at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association annual meeting which was held in San Antonio Texas in October 2011.
Each year, the top 10 papers presented at the meeting are selected as "highlight" papers and recognized at the upcoming, annual AAOS meeting. Kenneth Egol, MD, Chief of the Division, reports that 4 of the 10 highlight papers this year were from investigators in the Trauma Division of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Furthermore, the paper prepared and presented by resident Rachel Goldstein MD under the mentorship of Nirmal Tejwani MD on Popliteal Blocks Vs General Anesthesia for Ankle Fracture Fixation was selected as co-winner of the Edwin G. Boville Award for best podium presentation.
The other co-winner of the Boville award was a multi center study looking at ankle fracture fixation and members of the Trauma Division played a major role in and co-authored that study as well. In addition to Dr Goldstein, a number of residents including Edward Lin MD, Richelle Takemoto MD, Sonny Konda MD and Sonia Chaudhry MD (Highlight paper) presented their work and all were extremely well received. Dr Goldstein was also the recipient of the resident research award.
"I would like to thank all of the faculty, who were involved and supported these efforts for making this meeting an outstanding success and congratulate them all on their fine contributions to research and resident education," said Dr. Egol.
